What does Easter have to do with my marriage?
In Isaiah 53:5, we read- But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our guilt and iniquities; the chastisement [needful to obtain] peace and well-being for us was upon Him, and with the stripes [that wounded] Him we are healed and made whole. Easter is about the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus paid the ultimate price for my sin and yours. What a beautiful display of love, grace, forgiveness, and sacrifice.
Marriage is where we get to live out and practice love, grace, forgiveness, and sacrifice on a daily basis. It’s where we live out what God says in scripture: “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”
Marriage is a covenant that provides an opportunity for us to DIE. To die to self and embody the values of love, grace, forgiveness, and service in a tangible and meaningful way. Just as Jesus demonstrated these qualities through His ultimate sacrifice, couples in marriage can strive to reflect His love by laying down their lives in service to the other. Serving your spouse in this way is not easy as it requires us to look past what we may desire at the moment to give ourselves on behalf of another. I hear you saying, “But what about what I want and need.” I get it, and God sees what you need. Yet, marriage is a call to move beyond self and to image Christ; when you do that, you will not go wanting. Remember what He has done for you this Easter and ask yourself, “Am I serving my spouse and willing to lay my life down for them?”
